A suicide car bomber has attacked a police checkpoint in the north-western Pakistani city of Peshawar, killing at least 10 people, officials say. More than 25 other people were injured in the attack. Police say the attacker blew up his explosives-laden car as policemen went to search it in the Pushta Khara area. Peshawar has been regularly targeted by militants in recent weeks as the army continues its offensive against the Taliban in the South Waziristan. "The car bomber approached a barrier near the police checkpoint and then it exploded," city official Sahibzada Anis told Reuters news agency. Television footage showed a large cloud of smoke and the wreckage of cars after the blast. An eyewitness said he was waiting in the queue on his motorcycle when he saw a scuffle between the suspected bomber and the police. "He was a young man, about 20-year-old with small beard and wearing a white cap. When I noticed that his body was swollen, I left my bike there and ran away fearing he might be a bomber," witness Akbar Ali told the AFP news agency. He added that seconds later a huge blast threw him to the ground. A car bombing on Friday on intelligence agency offices in the city killed at least 12 people and injured 40. Two weeks ago more than 100 people were killed in a blast at a market.
