We Must Keep The Heat On Galamseyers!

Reports indicate that we are making progress in the fight to end illegal mining which is popularly referred to as galamsey.

According to the District Chief Executive of Twifo Atti-Morkwa in the Central Region, the fight against galamsey by the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry together with the Media Coalition Against Galamsey is yielding some positive results.

Mr Robert Agyemang Nyantakyi revealed to some journalists who visited his jurisdiction at the weekend that “we are grateful to the government and the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, our river [Pra] is showing some changes.”

“But since the fight, which drove away the illegal miners, life is returning to normalcy and the river is beginning to flow freely, an indication that things will work again,” he said.

To this end, Mr. Agyemang Nyantakyi stressed the need to intensify and sustain the campaign against galamsey till we do not have the practice in any of their operational communities in this country.

Today is elated at the news of some level of improvement in the Pra river.

At least it gives us hope that though galamsey has done enormous damage to our water bodies, we can improve them by ensuring that galamseyers do not return to the practice anymore!

Until the fight against galamsey started, the Pra river, among others, was charaterised by severe pollution from activities of galamseyers, which situation did not make it potable for human consumption.

It is in the light of the above that we are urging both government and all those supporting the Media Coalition Against Galamsey not to relent.

Obviously, this is the time that we must really intensify the campaign against ending galamsey which impacts have become devastating to imagine.

We believe that with a sustained campaign against galamsey and concerted efforts from all fronts, we will surely win the galamsey fight!

The heat is on.  Let us all rally together and ensure that we end galamsey now!
