The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) on Saturday called on the various security agencies to be fearless in the enforcement of the law but maintain professional standards. "You are under obligation to work without fear or favour irrespective of the personality involved for justice delivery as that is the only way to discourage obstruction of justice in the country," Mr Larri Bimi NCCE Chairman told the Ghana News Agency in an interview after a lecture at the Ghana Police College in Accra. Mr. Bimi challenged security personnel not to relent in their efforts to deal with criminals, who violate the law with impunity, and tasked them not to allow themselves to be used by politicians to achieve their selfish interests. He said it was imperative for security personnel to ensure strict enforcement of the rule of law, "to arrest and prosecute politicians who interfere with the laws". "It is becoming increasingly unacceptable that some activities of politicians in this country encourage lawlessness and the culture of impunity among the youth." Address the police, Mr Bimi noted that the function of the personnel in a democratic state generally depends on the political nature of the state. "If government is formed by means of free expression and exercise of the political will of the body politic, the police act as the guarantor of safety and security of the members constituting that body. "All, individual lives are protected from arbitrary violations and they are free to enjoy their rights. Liberty strives for law-abiding government, which serves the law, and in such situations the police function in the face of violations as stipulated by law," he said. The NCCE Chairman explained that the rule of law excludes arbitrariness committed by the police and other public servants. The police and all constituents of national and state government carry out the law-not the wish of any government. Mr. Bimi said the Ghana Police Service and the general society are subject to the rule of law. During the interactive period some of the police personnel called for regular interaction between the College and NCCE. They also appealed to the Police Administration to inculcate civic education in their training manual.
