A suicide car bomber has struck a police station in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, killing at least four people and injuring 20 others. The building itself in Badh Ber, south of the city, was seriously damaged, along with a small mosque nearby. The north-western city has been frequently targeted by militants recently, and this is the fifth attack in just over a week. More than 100 people were killed in a blast at a market a fortnight ago. Attacks across Pakistan have dramatically increased as the army continues its offensive against the Taliban in the South Waziristan region. The latest attack came despite police firing on the vehicle, which witnesses described as a pick-up truck, as it approached a police checkpoint. The explosion left a huge crater outside the station in Badh Ber, which is located about 12km (seven miles) from the centre of Peshawar. Separately, suspected Taliban militants shot dead a tribal elder in the Bajaur region, north of Peshawar. Malik Sher Zaman had joined forces with the government to battle the Taliban just months ago, local official Abdul Malik told the Associated Press news agency.
