Big Demo To Hit La

Residents of La, a suburb of Accra are gearing up to hit the streets in a peaceful demonstration to present a petition to the La Traditional Council to demand answers to a wide range of issues affecting development and reconciliation in the area. The planned demonstration is being organized by the La Citizens Network, an advocacy group in the community which is being supportered by the La Ga-Adangbe associations in Ireland, United Kingdom and the United States of America. In an interview with the General Secretary of the Network, Mr. Torto O. Nabi Adjah, the peaceful protest march through some principal streets in the La Community would seek to inquire from the Traditional Council about the payment of compensation which the erstwhile Ghana @50 Secretariat pledged on the acquisition of the La wireless land for the construction of executive mansions for Ghanas Golden Jubilee celebration and the African Union Heads of State summit. We want to hear from our elders whether the compensation had been paid and how the money was spent, the General Secretary observed. Mr. Nabi Adjah stated that high on the agenda in the petition is the celebration of the Homowo festival by the people of La which has not been celebrated since 2005. He said four years of no celebration of the Homowo festival is an indication that a reconciliation pact that was reached to bring factions in the La Community together seems to have not achieved a peaceful purpose. He added that the La Traditional Council would be expected to address other concerns among the people such as the management of the La Public Cemetery, which according to him has become a lucrative venture for some interest groups, including other pertinent issues confronting the development in the area. In view of the demonstration which has been scheduled next week Tuesday, a Public forum was held in the community yesterday to highlight on the rationale behind the demonstration to solicit massive support from the people.
