Superintendent (Mrs) Debora Addison-Campbell, Deputy Commander of the Motor Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service has expressed concern about the spate of accidents on the roads.
She therefore appealed to drivers to be cautious especially as Christmas approaches.
Supt. Addison-Campbell said drivers should aim at observing road traffic regulations during and after the Christmas in order to improve on road safety and prevent loss of human lives.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday, she said driver education provided by the police for private and commercial vehicle drivers alone cannot change attitudes and minimise road accidents.
Supt. Addison-Campbell said the police would embark on an exercise to clampdown on drivers who fail to use the logbook introduce by the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority to check overspeeding by commercial divers.
She said the police would also mount an exercise on the highways to check and arrest recalcitrant drivers for prosecution.
She also advised vehicle owners not to allow persons below 25 years to drive their commercial vehicles and warned that any offender would be made to face the full rigours of the law.
Supt. Addison-Campbell expressed the hope that through the collaborative efforts of social partners, the carnage would minimise as the nation needed all her citizens alive.
She advised commercial drivers to avoid the use of over used vehicle tyres, which she said was also contributory factor to fatal accidents on the roads.
