AWLA demand early passage of Bill

The African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA), has called for an early passage of the Property Rights of Spouses Bill (PRSB) into law. It said an early introduction of the law was necessary to address the many problems that have bedevilled the implementation of the Intestate Succession Law (PNDC Law 111). Ms Edna Kuma, Executive Director of the Association, said it would largely help to bring down polygamous marriages and end the usual confusion over the estate(s) of dead spouses. She was speaking at the third in a series of nationwide advocacy workshops held at Atasomaso in Kumasi at the weekend. Participants were drawn from the Attorney General's Department, Ministries, Departments and Agencies, Civil Society Organisations and chieftaincy institutions. Similar workshops had already been held by the Association at Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region and at Sunyani in Brong-Ahafo Region. The workshops aimed at providing better understanding of the Bill in order to gain public acceptance. Ms Kuma said under international human right laws such as the Convention on Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), Ghana is expected to ensure that men and women enjoy the same rights and responsibilities in and after marriage.
