Trade union elects new officers

The Greater Accra Regional council of the Local Government Workers' Union (LGWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) on Thursday elected an eight-member regional executive to manage the union's affairs for the next four years. The election climaxed the union's honouring of its loyal and dedicated regional chairmen who had retired. Mr Anthony Oppong and Mr Daniel Tetteh emerged chairman and Vice Chairman respectively. Miss Monica Annan, Regional Industrial Relation Officer as Secretary, Miss Margaret Collison, 2nd Vice while Victoria Sarko and Mary Sackey as 1st and 2nd trustees respectively. Two other members who were elected to represent the region at the National Executive Committee were Miss Babara Quaye and Mr Charles Boison. Mr Joe Boahen, General Secretary of the LGWU, urged the new elected members to focus on trade union education as a priority and use it to fight ignorance among the members in the region. He said the TUC, in collaboration with the University of Cape Coast, have organised a certificate in labour studies that would help members to acquire more knowledge in trade unionism.
