Suhum hospital appeals of an accident centre

The Suhum Government Hospital needs a well equipped accident centre to take care of the ever emergencies within its vicinity, its chief physician has said. Medical officers of the hospital are forced to manage accident victims on stretchers and benches at the corridors of the wards during emergencies. The Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr. Joseph Ashong made the appeal at the launching of the 50th anniversary of the hospital at Suhum at the weekend. Dr. Ashong said for every 700 cases treated at the hospital, about 400 were accidents victims and expressed the hope that the needed support would be available to enable the hospital to construct an accident centre to commemorate the 50th anniversary next year. He observed that the hospital had also made strides in the management of HIV and AIDS cases by constructing an Anti Retroviral Therapy centre for effective clinical management of the disease. Dr. Erasmus Arongo, the Eastern Regional Director of Health Services, said the hospital must meet the needs of the community and therefore called for a strong partnership among all stakeholders. The building of the accident centre, he said must therefore engage the attention of all stakeholders. He urge them to use the anniversary to reflect on their achievements and failures as in the case of the accident centre and engage all stakeholders for the necessary support in filling the gaps for an improved healthcare. The Suhum Kraboa Coaltar District Chief Executive (DCE) Mr. Samuel Kwabi announced that the assembly had earmarked 5,000 Ghana Cedis towards the construction of the accident centre as well as over 8,000 Ghana Cedis towards the eradication of malaria in the District. Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo expressed his appreciation for the desire of the management of the hospital to construct an accident centre. He assured that government would not hesitate to respond to the call of the hospital in building the accident centre since it falls in line with the promise of building a better Ghana for all. The Suhum Government hospital which was built 50 years ago is located on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, an accident prone area in Ghana but has no accident centre and yet served as the first point of call in times of emergencies along the Nsawam- Apedwa stretch of the highway.
