GPRTU appeals to government

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has appealed to the government to robe in guards of the union to the National Youth Employment Programme, to police drivers to minimise road accidents. The National Vice Chairman of the GPRTU, Alhaji Antie Tetteh made the appeal in Accra on Monday through the Ghana News Agency at an emergency meeting to discuss the recent fatal accidents in the Central and Eastern regions. He said the guards could collaborate with the police to monitor the professional conduct of GPRTU drivers. Alhaji Tetteh said the meeting directed the two regional secretariats of the union to furnish the National Executive with the cause of the fatal accidents. In addition station masters and union executives should undertake spot checks on vehicles and sanction drivers who are driving under the influence of alcohol. Alhaji Tetteh expressed worry about the spate of accidents in the country and the inability of some drivers to follow simple basic driving regulations. He advised drivers to be cautious on the roads to avoid accidents during the Christmas and New Year festivities. Meanwhile the National Secretariat has expressed its condolences to the bereaved families of the accident victims.
