Inmates of Borstal Institute receive items

The management of Foundation for Peace Building and Awareness Walk (FPBAW) on Thursday presented used clothing valued at GHC400 and GHC600 cash to inmates of the Borstal Institute (Senior Correctional Centre in Accra. Mr. Solomon Benjamin Asare, Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation presenting the items said the welfare of children and the youth in Ghana must be the primary concern because they are the future leaders. He expressed concern about the deplorable conditions at the institute and called for assistance to improve the conditions while empowering the youth to participate in the decision making process. "The gesture is to encourage the inmates to feel accepted, cared for and not be outcasts in the society," he added. Mr Asare said the Foundation would establish a computer Information Technology centre and facilities for physical education and recreational activities for the inmates and appealed for assistance from other organisations, institutions and individuals. Mrs. Elizabeth King, Deputy Director of Prisons receiving the items said it would help the inmates to feel they were not being neglected by society. She noted that government had assisted the institute to reform the inmates but needed more support because the daily allowance of 60 pesewas per inmate provided by the government was inadequate for their rehabilitation. The Foundation a charitable, non-governmental and non-profit organisation was established in November last year to inspire and provide formal and informal education to humanity. It also focuses on advocacy and the fight against social vices, promote empowerment, self reliance and housing facilities for the vulnerable in the society.
