The Mamprobi Police have demolished a notable wooden structure at Chorkor suspected to be the hiding place of some hardened criminals in the popular fishing community in the Greater Accra Region.
The operation, which was led by the Mamprobi District Police Commander, DSP George Asare, was carried out to arrest criminals in the area.
Some quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, hard liquor and cigarettes, were found in the wooden structure when the police stormed the area yesterday at 4am to carry out the demolition.
When Daily Guide visited the area, the paper realized that the wood that was used to build the structure had been cleared.
Though none of the suspected criminals was arrested, DSP George Asare told the paper in an interview that the residents were happy with the demolition of the wooden structures.
Criminals hide in the wooden structure to commit robbery, petty stealing, drug peddling and others.
The commanding officer said several reports on their activities were received by the district command but anytime the police storm the area to apprehend suspects, they jump into the sea.
“Some informants in league with the criminals always inform them anytime the police attempt to apprehend them,” he averred.
He said the structure was situated at a very strategic point in the area where the criminals rob unsuspected members of the public in the night.
“It also served as a meeting place for criminals who met there to plan their nefarious activities.”
He promised to occasionally storm the area to rid the area of criminals and stop the reconstruction of the structure.
Both the Mamprobi Police and the Dansoman Division periodically storm the areas to arrest criminals, but it seems their activities have not subsided.
