Market women urged not to set fire at market places

Nana Agyen Frimpong II, Tafohene, has advised traders to be wary of activities or actions that could cause fire outbreak in market places. He said it was in their interest and that of society to ensure strict compliance with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly's (KMA) directive to ban the setting of fire at all markets. Nana Frimpong II advice is coming at a time that the country is entering the dry season. He gave the advice at a meeting with market women, traders, assembly and unit committee members at Old Tafo in the Kumasi. It was jointly held by the chiefs and the Tafo Town Council to complement the KMA and the Ghana National Fire Service efforts to end the streak of market fires in the Metropolis. Three major markets in Kumasi, the Central Market, Bantama and Asafo markets were all ravaged by fire last year resulting in the loss of millions of cedis in cash and wares. Nana Frimpong said the huge amount of money the Assembly spent to rehabilitate the markets after such disasters, could be used to support other socio-economic development programmes to make life better for the people. The chief also reminded them about the need to keep the environment clean to avoid diseases. Mr Francis Ampadu, Assemblyman for Old-Tafo-Ahenbronum and acting Chairman of the Town Council, announced that the Tafo market would everyday be opened for business from O630 hours until 1830 hours. He spoke of plans to provide adequate security, improve the lighting system and other facilities at the market. He called on the traders to pay their taxes to enable the Council mobilize more revenue to bring development to the area.
