Asante-Mampong honours 20 hard working farmers

Seventeen (17) farmers together with two schools and an agricultural extension officer in the Asante-Mampong Municipality have been presented with prizes for their hard work and extraordinary performance. They received the awards at the 25th National Farmers Day Celebration held at Adidwan, the district capital on Friday. The award winners received bicycles, radio-cassette recorders, spraying machines, pieces of wax-print, pair of Wellington boot each, wheelbarrows, machetes and certificates. Mr Osei Boakye Kyeretwie, 59, from Kyeremfaso was voted the overall District Best Farmer for the year. Mr Daniel Ohyeamang, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), said there was the need for farmers to adopt new approaches to improve on their yield. The nation should move aggressively towards agricultural modernisation to achieve food security and raise the living standard of the people, he said. Mr Kyeretwie said it was in pursuit of this that government had introduced interventions such as the subsidisation of fertiliser products, importation of more tractors at subsidised prices and offering of loans to large scale maize producers. Mr Addai Nimoh, Member of Parliament for the area welcomed the 250 million Ghana Cedis budgetary allocation for the supply of modern agricultural equipment to farmers. He encouraged the youth to go into farming.
