Bongo records 50% increase in crop production

The Bongo District in the Upper East Region recorded 50 per cent increase in crop production in 2009 as compared to 2008. The District Director of Agriculture, Alhaji Musbahu Ahmed announced this during the District Farmers Day celebration, held at Balungu in the Bongo District on Thursday. He attributed the increase in crop production to the adherence of farmers to good farming practices given by the technical team of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. Alhaji Ahmed said rabies hit parts of the district this year and appealed to the people to vaccinate all their pets particularly dogs against the disease. The District Chief Executive, Mr. Clement Akugre commended farmers for stepping up food production in the area and asked them to see farming as a business enterprise. He said Government had sponsored 90 youth to cultivate the rice field at Gambrungu. The overall best farmer in the District went to Mr. Ayorigo Atinga who took home a motorbike, sound system, three cutlasses, pair of Willington boot, half piece of wax print, three bags of fertilisers and a certificate. Other 15 farmers were given awards.
