22 farmers receive awards at Ejura-Sekyedumase

Twenty-two (22) farmers at the Ejura-Sekyedumase District in the Ashanti Region were honoured during the national farmers day celebration at Frante near Ejura on Friday. Mr Zibrilla Iddrisu, 38, a livestock, poultry and crop farmer at Kabre village was adjudged the overall District Best Farmer. He received a table-top fridge, a full piece wax of print, a carton of herbicide, Knapsac sprayer, Ghetto Blaster, a pair of Wellington boot and two cutlasses. The other best farmers including the best aged farmer, the best physically challenged and the best youth farmer took home various items. Dr. James Garti-Adjonor, District Director of Agriculture stressed the need for the modernisation of food production all stages of especially storage, processing and transportation. He said improper application of agro-chemicals as the main cause of environmental degradation, which have serious effect on food production. Ms Martha Bruckner, District Chief Executive appealed to financial institutions to grant credit facilities to farmers to boost productivity. She urged young people in the area to embrace the Government's Youth- in-Agriculture programme so that they could improve on their living standard.
