Homosexuality: Bawumia Should Distance Himself From His Boss’ Statement!

Member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, Sammy Gyamfi, has called on the Vice-President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia to disassociate himself from the comments made by the president few days ago on Aljazeera.

The President in an interview with the Qatar-based TV station, noted that homosexuality could in future be legalized in Ghana through sufficiently strong coalition.

This is a social, cultural issue, I don’t believe that in Ghana so far, a sufficiently strong coalition has emerged which is having that impact on public opinion that will say ‘change it, let’s now have a new paradigm in Ghana.’

At the moment, I don’t feel, I don’t see that in Ghana there is that strong current of opinion that is saying this is something we need to deal with. It is not so far a matter that is on the agenda,” he added.

Barely 48-hours after the entire interview of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was aired on show dubbed “Talked to Aljazeera” hosted by Jane Dutton, he has come under pressure over comments to the effect that the current law on homosexuality in Ghana is bound to change.

The President’s remarks appear not to have sat well with some anti-homosexual campaigners who insist that the country’s religious and social cultural beliefs frown on such practices.

But persons who are opposed to this are still in doubt if indeed the comments attributed to the President are true.

Speaking to the issue on UTV’s ‘Adekye Nsroma’ show, Mr. Gyamfi charged the Vice-President to state his stance on homosexuality especially when he professes to be a devout Muslim.

Vice-President, Dr. Bawumia should speak on this and distance himself from the President’s comments because he is a Muslim and his religion is 100% against such practice …, I expect to hear from him soon,” he stated.

He further cautioned the president against any attempt to subtly spearhead a crusade for the legalization of homosexual practice in Ghana.

“….in all seriousness, the President should not think he can scrap-off within few minutes’ what our fore-fathers and past leaders of this land have fought against for years, just for his selfish interest and sponsorships for his government”.

According to him, “it will do the president a lot of good to save his breath by withdrawing his statements and promise never to speak in that manner” on behalf of this country.
