Cop Grabbed For Rape

Constable Akossey Jake, who allegedly raped a 19-year-old lady at Cantonment in Accra, has been remanded into custody by an Accra Central District Court, presided over by Worlanyo Kotoku.

The cop is alleged to have committed the offence at a chop bar (food joint) behind the national police headquarters.

He reportedly took advantage of the victim’s mother’s absence and purportedly raped her.

He was dragged to the court on a charge of rape, and his plea of not guilty was not taken.

A state prosecutor, Detective Sergeant Simon Tekpor, told the court that the victim’s mother owns a chop bar behind the police headquarters and part of it is used as a place of abode.

He said the 30-year-old police officer frequents the joint, where the victim assists her mother to sell food and drinks.

D/Sgt. Tekpor narrated that on November 11, 2017, at about 11:30 pm, the accused cop went to the bar to buy drink.

“After being served with the drink, suspect started caressing the complainant, which she protested and asked the suspect to leave the bar; but suspect refused and forcibly had sexual intercourse with the victim without her consent,” the prosecutor told the court.

He said the victim called her mother and her uncle to narrate the incident to them.

D/Sgt Tekpor stated that the victim’s uncle accompanied her to the Cantonment Police Station where a complaint was lodged.

He added that the victim was issued with a police medical report form to attend hospital for examination and a report was issued on her.

He said the case was then transferred to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service and Constable Akossey Jake was arrested.

He maintained that investigations were still ongoing.
