It has been home to every event imaginable in Ghana since its establishment in 1992 and the management of the National Theatre hopes to serve the public better as it marks its Silver Jubilee next year.
Speaking at the official launch of the 25th anniversary on Tuesday, the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Madam Catherine Afeku lauded the efforts of past and present managements in keeping it running.
According to her, the role of the National Theatre in shaping and building the arts and entertainment industry cannot be belittled as it has established many ventures such as Kiddafest and Concert Party.
“Concert Party as a uniquely Ghanaian art form became a national programme and unearthed many talents. Events such as Fun World and Kiddafest discovered many gifts and provided the foundation for a host of stars in dance, drama and music.
The Executive Director of the National Theatre, Mrs Amy Appiah, disclosed that management had done some improvements inlcuding replacing the lobby’s glass doors, fixed the orchestra pit, replaced the carpet in the main auditorium and provided a VIP room.
“In the next 25 years, we want to make every citizen feel a part of the National Theatre regardless of economic, educational ability and geographic location. Today is just the beginning of our year-long celebration in all the 10 regions,” she said.
She revealed that three major productions have been planned by the resident groups. They are Marriage of Anansewa which will be presented in Nigeria in March, a dance performance titled Agoro in June and a Symphony collaboration with an internationally acclaimed Baritone from Czech Republic in November.
Other activities are an exhibition that will focus on the history of the National Theatre, a ceremony to honour the men and women who have worked for the success of the Theatre and a monthly drama programme in collaboration with Two Idiots Productions.
The anniversary launch was interspersed with performances by the National Symphony Orchestra, National Dance Ensemble and the National Drama Company.
