Massive Exercise To Disinfect Kumasi Academy SHS Gets Underway

A massive exercise to disinfect dormitories, classrooms, dining and assembly halls, wash and bathrooms of the Kumasi Academy Senior High School (KUMACA) to protect the students and their teachers from bacterial infection got underway on Wednesday.

The two-week exercise is being carried out jointly by the Health Ministry and Pathos AIB Limited, producers of hospital grade disinfectants and sterilant.

It comes amid the recent reported outbreak of swine flu (H1N1) in the school that claimed the lives of four students and left scores sick.

In April, seven students in the very same SHS had been killed by meningitis.

The exercise is meant to augment efforts at preventing the spread of pathogens and other bacteria responsible for the outbreak of epidemics.

Mr. Felix Danso, Managing Director of Pathos, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), that it was preceded by site assessment of facilities in the school, including classrooms, dormitories, bathrooms, washrooms, dining and assembly halls.

“Our observation is that pathogens and other harmful bacteria are likely to thrive in the school due to poor environmental conditions.”

He described the present environmental sanitation there as worrying, and spoke of the need for periodic disinfection of the place.

The Reverend Sylvester Osei Owusu, the Headmaster, announced that all students, who fell sick and were hospitalized had been discharged and joined their colleagues to write the end of term examination.
