Lets' use culture to transform the society - Onyinah

A three-day workshop to strengthen the teaching of culture in schools opened at the Centre for National Culture in Kumasi on Friday. Attending are about 60 district cultural officers and coordinators of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Ashanti Region. "Adulteration of culture; A menace to national development" is the theme and the participants are discussing topics ranging from "Teaching of music and dance", "Festival songs", Drama and dance language", "Poetry recital and drum language" to "Techniques in visual arts exhibition." The Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Mr Joseph Onyinah, said culture was a powerful tool that could be used to positively transform society and speed up socio-economic progress. He said there was the need to assist the youth to take pride in the nation's cultural heritage. "Everything must be done to promote acceptable societal values and prevent the disintegration of the cultural cohesion and unity," he said. Mr Onyinah urged teachers to nurture the creative abilities and potentials of children for the development of society.
