President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has denied engaging in a 'conspiracy theory' as far as promoting homosexuality in the country is concerned.

The president courted controversies after his homosexuality comment on Qatar-based Al-Jazeera went viral late last year.

During the interview, the President stated that even though legalising homosexuality is not on his government's agenda for now if there is a strong coalition and agitation for legalization in the future an amendment of the law will be considered.

“This is a social, cultural issue, I don’t believe that in Ghana so far, a sufficiently strong coalition has emerged which is having that impact on public opinion that will say ‘change it, let’s now have a new paradigm in Ghana. At the moment, I don’t feel, I don’t see that in Ghana there is that strong current of opinion that is saying this is something we need to deal with. It is not so far a matter that is on the agenda” he said.

After his interview, various reports emerged of groups and individuals advocating for the legalisation of homosexuality in the country.

During the meet the press series; first in 2018 and second in the ruling administration, a journalist sought to find out if the President intentionally made those remarks to urge such groups to come out; in a form of a ‘conspiracy theory’.

In answer to that question, President Akufo-Addo said “I am not involved in any conspiracy…”

“I think these are matters that are in the public domain and people are entitled to their own views. There is no concerted synchronised attempt on my part to promote the advocacy of it” he said.
