Amend The Constitution . . . It's Not Quran Or Bible! - Nana Ofori Owusu

Aspiring National Chairman of the Progressive People's Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu is asking President Nana Akufo-Addo to make amendments to the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

This is because, to Nana Ofori Owusu, the certain provisions in the constitution do not make any sense.

Contributing to a panel discussion on Peace FM's Kokrokoo, he wondered why the nation's leaders have failed to review those provisions in the constitution which are stagnating the country.

Making particular reference to Article 60 clause 8 & 11 of constitution which states that "whenever the President is absent from Ghana or is for any other reason unable to perform the functions of his office, the Vice-President shall perform the function of the President until the President returns or is able to perform...(11) Where the President and the Vice-President are both unable to perform the functions of the President, the Speaker of Parliament shall perform those functions until the President or the Vice-President is able to perform those functions or a new President assumes office, as the case may be", Nana Ofori Owusu believed it might create conflicts in the future.

He advised the leadership of the country to take a critical look at the constitutional provision and ensure its amendment before the unexpected happens.

“ . . we continue to look at the problem, talk around it, dance around it and then when we finish, we sit there and put our arms between our legs . . . We lie to ourselves. We deceive ourselves. And we have leaders that they have to be able to climb out of doldrums. They have to wake up".

He insisted that the constitution is an enactment made by people and so it's subject to change.

"You cannot have a nation that’s competing against other nations, then you have a flaw in your constitution that’s crippling you; doesn’t allow you to do many things and then you continue to look at this book that is sitting there and point to the book that the book is the problem. The problem is leadership who cannot take the decisions to change provisions in the book. This book is not the Quran. It’s not the Torah. It’s not the Bible. This book is an enactment of a people meaning we made the book and so we have the ability to change . . . We’re such a hypocritical nation. We cannot tell the truth nor face the truth”, he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi.
