GGG Awards Unveiled To Honor Gov't Officials

It’s often said that the hallmark of leadership is probity, accountability and integrity. Every leader is highly expected to live a life worthy of emulation.

When people are elected or selected to leadership stage, an earnest expectation is for them to render good account of their stewardship to the electorates.

Ghana, of course, is no exception and so Heads of State and their appointees have the responsibility to execute their duties effectively and competently.

In respect of this, Good Governance Awards Ghana (GGG Awards), an awards ceremony, has been initiated to honour the hard work of government appointees and also expose those who fail to perform their duties effectively.

Good Governance Awards - the first of its kind in Ghana - is designed to celebrate and reward industrious Ministers of State, Members of Parliament (MPs), the Judicial Service, MMDCEs and Managing Directors of State institutions among others.

The ceremony is an initiative by the Africa Center for Strategic Government Performance in partnership with the Government of Ghana.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Holiday Inn in Accra on Thursday, February 15, 2018, the Board for the awards chaired by Chief of Brekusu and Twafohene of Akwapim Traditional Council Nana Oteng Korankye II briefed the media on the significance of the awards.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Awards Scheme, Prince Mackay; as part of measures to stimulate government officials to deliver on their core mandate to the nation, a Hall of Fame edifice is to be constructed "which will house portraits and monuments of persons who have distinguished themselves in good governance practices in Ghana".

The concept behind the edifice is to induct key personalities such as Ex-Presidents and their Vice Presidents, Ministers of State, Chief Justices, previous and present Speakers of Parliament, Members of Parliament (MPs), traditional rulers and various public sector workers in order to "serve as a record keeping facility where vital information of distinguished personalities in good governance practices can be assessed" and patrons allowed to go for first-hand information about the inductees from the edifice.

Aside the Hall of Fame edifice serving as a "learning reference center”, it is also for tourism purposes to generate revenue for the country.

Mr. Mackay also delineated that the structure which is yet to be constructed will have four floors which are an Executive floor to keep monuments of past and current Heads of State and Vice Presidents, a legislative floor which will also house former and present Speakers of Parliament as well as Ministers of State and Parliamentarians, Judicial and traditional floors for Judicial officials and traditional rulers respectively.
