Avoid Partisan Politics - CLOGSAG

The Civil and Local Government Staff Association (CLOGSAG) has reminded its members of the laws relating to their participation in partisan politics and to desist from it.

It said the relevant legislations could be found under Article 94(3) of the 1992 Constitution and Political Parties Act, 2000 section 26.

Article 94(3) states: “A person shall not be eligible to be a Member of Parliament if he

(a) is prohibited from standing election by a law in force in Ghana by reason of his holding or acting in an office the functions of which involve a responsibility for or are connected with the conduct of, an election or responsibility for, the compilation or revision of an electoral register; “(b) is a member of the Police Service, the Prisons Service, the Armed Forces, the Judicial Service, the Legal Service, the Civil Service, the Audit Service, the Parliamentary Service, the Statistical Service, the Fire Service, the Customs Excise and Preventive Service, the Immigration Service, or the Internal Revenue Service; or (c) is a chief.”

The reminder was in statement signed by Mr Isaac Bampoe Addo, the Executive Secretary of CLOGSAG and copied to the Ghana News Agency, on Thursday.

It said the Political Parties Act, 2000 (Act 574 Section 26) stipulates that: “A chief or any other person, who is not eligible to be elected to Parliament, does not qualify to (a) be a founding member, a leader or a member of the executive of a political party, or (b) hold office in a political party.”

The statement said it was evident that workers within the Civil and Local Government Services were ineligible to participate in activities of political parties and hold any office in a political party as denoted in the above laws.
The CLOGSAG, therefore, requested all its members to desist from any act that may bring them into conflict with existing legislations on participation in partisan politics by public officers.
