Bullion van robbers appear before court

Five men and a woman who allegedly conspired to rob a bullion van at Agbogba near Madina in Accra and made away with GHC22, 044 on Thursday appeared before an Accra Fast Track High Court. The accused persons jointly charged with the conspiracy to rob are Kofi Afoakwah aka Not Nice and Kofi Rasta, Yaw Afoakwah, Kingsley Lamani aka Benin Boy. The rest are Issac Oppong, Joe Babanawo Dotse and Stella Murphy. Babanawo Dotse a 70-year-old spiritualist who allegedly fortified them with spiritual powers and Stella a trader are facing additional charge of abetment of crime. Kofi and Yaw Afoakwah, both drivers, Oppong and Lamani, mechanics have been additionally charged with robbery. An accomplice Joe Babanawo however, died during a shoot out with the police. Their pleas were not taken and remanded into police custody to re-appear on January 12. Due to the ill-health of Dotse, the court granted him GHC20, 000 bail with two sureties to be justified after pleas by his counsel Mr. G.S.K Babanawo. He is to report once a week to the police. In the mid-morning of October 27, police arrested the accused persons who allegedly attacked officials of the Trust Bank, who had collected GHC22, 044 in a bullion van from the management of Anti's Company, dealers in building materials. They snatched an AK47 rifle from a policeman on guard duty at a filling station but another policeman shot at one of the robbers compelling the rest to flee.
