Dabrah wins Nana Wereko Ampem Memorial Golf

Benjamin Dabrah, Managing Director of Barclays Bank Ghana Limited, scored 40 points to win this year's Nana Wereko Ampem II Memorial Open Golf Championship played at the Achimota Golf Course in Accra on Sunday. Dabrah who swept through a field of more than 100 participants, played 23 Back and 17 Front with a handicap of 15 to lift the trophy for the first time. The second position was taken by Emmanuel Dontoh with 38 points, with H. A. Gouvinus placing third with 37 points after he beat Kumi Ampofo on count-back while Tei Mantey placed fifth with 36 points. In the Ladies segment, Margaret Owusu-Baah came first with 40 points, beating Esi Cobbina on count-back, Francisca Vandyck took the third position with 36 points while Maria Ben-George was fourth with 35 points. Emmanuel Quashie defeated his brother, Richard on count-back after they had both scored 40 points to win the Juniors event. T. K. Gouvinus came first in the Professional's category with 68 gross, while Robert Degbe came second with 70 gross, beating Godfred Sai on count-back The one-day 18-Hole Stable-ford event which was opened to both amateur and professional golfers throughout the country, was played in memory of the late Nana Wereko Ampem II, Gyasehene of Amanokrom and former President of the Achimota Golf Club. Mr Mike Ezan, President of the Achimota Golf Club described the late Nana Ampem as a man whose contributions has made the Club to develop to international standards. He called on the members of the Club to emulate the shining example of the avid golfer who through hard work rose from the rank of Captain in 1974 to President in 1990. Nana Awuku Sakyi, Akyempimhene of Amanokrom, son of Nana Ampem who was assisted by Mr Ezan to presenht the ultimate prize to the winner, gave the assurance that the competition would be played next year.
