Provost-College of Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof Mark Adom-Asamoah, has advised students in the various tertiary institutions to position themselves to affect the world positively from the knowledge they gain after school.

He warned students not to focus their minds on just gaining university certificates, who often make them educated illiterates and consequently irrelevant to their country.

Prof Adom-Asamoah gave the advice at the Accra Institute of Technology’s (AIT) 2018 Matriculation and Graduation Ceremony held at Osu Presbyterian Church Hall last Monday.

The Provost-College of Engineering at the KNUST explained that gaining knowledge was insufficient; going the next step to act out this knowledge and affect the world positively should be the sole focus of every student.

“Everyone’s tertiary education is measured by the number of lives it impacts on the people in his/her community and the country as a whole,” he added.

Prof Adom-Asamoah again tasked students of the institute to undertake research in sectors that its findings at the end of their work will help solve the country’s numerous problems but not to end on shelves.

He also encouraged the students to work hard to uphold the highest standards set by the institution over the years.

“I will like to assure you here today and the entire AIT community of our firm resolve to maintain the highest standards as far as the training of the students is concerned. Quality education requires a great deal of efforts from both students and lecturers and of course an enabling and conducive environment which is provided for by the university administration,” Prof Adom-Asamoah stated.

For his part, President of AIT, Prof Clement Dzidonu, in an address admonished the students to take responsibility for their actions and never give up what they want to do.

“Set high personal and academic standards for yourself and live up to them. Remember that grades count and you must earn your grades, choose your friends carefully, don’t make important decisions based on second-hand information, seek out special opportunities and take time to give back to the university,” he told students in his address at the event.

He also challenged freshmen and women to do more to achieve the ultimate goal of academic success and project the good brand of the institute during their stay as well as be guided by the values the institute instills in them.

The school which is an affiliate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) saw 957 students comprising 801 males and 156 females matriculating out of which 701 are campus-based and 256 open based to read various programmes including CTech/DTech programmes, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, and Business administration.
