The R4.5 billion Cape Town stadium is ready for action, say the stadium's operators while unveiling their plans for two events to test the stadium's mass crowd capabilities ahead of next year's FIFA World Cup.
After 33 months of construction, the Mother City's stadium is ready to welcome Cape Town and the world. In January, it hosts Ajax and Santos with an expected crowd of 20 000 and a rugby match with a 40 000 strong crowd between the Stormers and a Boland invitational team is on the cards for February.
The stadium has a seating capacity of 55 000 while another 13 000 seats will be added for next year's World Cup matches. Designed to ensure the best possible viewing from anywhere in the stands, the seats are close to the pitch.
The stadium is located in Green Point, between Signal Hill and the Atlantic Ocean, close to the Cape Town city centre and to the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, a popular tourist and shopping venue.
A safety and security plan will also be tested during the trial runs.
However, Capetonians could be in for major traffic problems during test events. Stadium operators Stade de France and Sail today announced which events would be held at Cape Town Stadium to test its readiness for the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup.
Traffic management is one of the biggest problems facing the stadium operators as the city�s bus rapid transit system will not be up and running by then. Parking will also be limited. Normally fields around the venue have been used for parking but now these areas are currently under construction.
