Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has assured Ghanaians that the government’s pledge to allocate $1 million to each of the 275 constituencies would enhance the development of the country.
“Government has set aside 20 per cent of the country’s capital expenditure, which is equivalent to $1 million, for projects and job creation in all the constituencies. This will enable wealth creation and development projects to trickle down to the grassroots,” he added.
In view of this, the vice president indicated that for the first time, government has established three new development authorities – Northern, Middle Belt and Coastal Development – and their chief executives appointed to administer the funds.
Dr. Bawumia called on all and sundry to support the authorities to collectively ensure that development trickled down to the local levels to ensure improved living standards.
Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia made these assertions when he paid a courtesy call on the Omanhene of the Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area, Tetrete Okuamoah Sakyim II, in the Western Region yesterday.
He was in the region as part of his nationwide Ramadan tour to pray with his Muslim brethren and seek Allah’s blessing for the nation.
Muslims across the world have begun the 30 days’ period of fasting, as they seek to strengthen their spiritual growth.
The veep pointed out that the government is on course to meet its part of the social contract it signed with Ghanaians during the 2016 electioneering campaign.
“Since Nana Akufo-Addo became president, the government has been fulfilling its promises.
“We promised Free Senior High School education, we have delivered; we promised to restore teacher trainee allowance, we have delivered.
“We also promised to restore nursing training allowance, we have delivered; we promised to reduce electricity tariffs, we have delivered,” he noted.
Dr Bawumia added that as part of government’s efforts to create jobs for the teeming unemployed graduates, the Nation Builders’ Corps (NaBCo) has been set up to create employment for them.
He encouraged graduates who had served the nation through the National Service Scheme to apply for jobs on the NaBCo.
“About 350 graduates are expected to be hired from each of the districts nationwide under the programme,” the vice president maintained.
The Omanhene, Tetrete Okuamoah Sakyim II, believed that the NPP government’s resolve to sanitize the mining space is commendable and worthy of support.
He, however, charged the government to speed up with the processes to ensure that licensed small-scale miners go back to work.
From the chief’s palace, the vice president joined Muslims at the main mosque at Wassa Akropong to offer special prayers for the sustenance and enhancement of the peace Ghana is enjoying.
“Let us pray for our dear country Ghana and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I wish you a blessed month. May Allah’s peace be upon us all,” he prayed.
The Vice President was accompanied by Boniface Abubakar Saddique, Minister for Inner City and Zongo Development; Dr Kwaku Afriyie, Western Regional Minister; his deputy, Gifty Eugenia Kusi and other government officials.
