The General Overseer of Jesus Generation Ministries, Rt. Rev. Dr. Nana Anyani-Boadum, has deplored the manner in which media space and internet use in the country have become flooded with strange biblical teachings and practices orchestrated by some unscrupulous persons parading as genuine clergymen.
“There are pastors who claim to be endowed with very special revelatory experience when, underneath the façade, it is all deceit and manipulation of witchcraft,” he said.
Reverend Anyani-Boadum made these observations in an interview with the Daily Graphic last Sunday.
Insanity in pulpit
Sharing his perspectives with the Daily Graphic on what he made of the current trend of so-called men of God who took advantage of their vulnerable followers for their selfish interest, Rev. Anyani-Boadum decried what he described as the insanity of the pulpit and added that the situation needed to be addressed to help enlighten the unsuspecting public.
“We are living in times when people who claim to be endowed with special supernatural disclosures ask their congregations to remove their undies openly in church and wave them, all in worship of God. Some ask their church members to hold their genitals as part of worship to the extent that some pastors even ask females in their churches to suck their genitals for seminal fluid which they say is consecrated and of the Holy Spirit,” he said with regret in his voice.
He recounted with revulsion how certain pastors in other jurisdictions sucked the breasts of women in their churches and others submitted to the altars of secret societies.
“When you consider their message, language, expressions and content of what they preach, you find there is nothing Christian-like about them. Their activities are not in line with the prophetic ministry. In plain language preachers of such ilk are not Christians and are not practicing Christianity,” he stated.
Reverend Anyani-Boadum said a close examination would reveal that such bogus prophets were delusional and at worst insane.
Congregants blamed
He questioned why people gathered for worship would subject themselves to thievery and deceit, saying “patrons of such churches include politicians, athletes, celebrities, business executives, lawyers, judges, professors, medical doctors, and simpletons who are desirous of consolidating power and positions because of their fear of the future and the unknown.”
In an apparent reaction to one Ghanaian preacher who had said publicly that Jesus Christ made many mistakes in the Bible, Rev. Anyani-Boadum noted that the huge patronage such preachers enjoyed got them emboldened to extend their arrogance to God and hurl abuses at Him with impunity.
“The activities of these persons depict Christ’s concern in Matthew 13.24-30, which talks about the parable of the good seed and the weeds. I strongly believe that these shameful and unethical practices are partly due to the undefined prosperity teaching which has ‘invaded’ the pulpit,” he added.
Need for sound doctrine
Rev. Anyani-Boadum, who is also an executive member of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, said members of any church needed to understand that enduring Christian faith was not built merely on good feelings, neither on brief moments of sensing God’s presence in corporate worship but it was rather built on knowing and understanding the truth about God.
“And that adherence to sound biblical doctrines is important because what we believe affects what we do. Behavior is an extension of theology, and there is a direct correlation between what we think and how we act,” he pointed out.
According to him, the posturing of the Church of God today was opposite to the foundation laid by the Apostles of Christ who sacrificed fame, fortune and their lives, unlike the current situation where church leaders clamoured for fame, wealth, prestige and dignity.
