RESIDENTS OF Community 5 in Tema of the Greater Accra Region are in a state of shock following the boiling of a 13-year-old girl’s fingers by her guardian, Madam Juliana Makyi in hot water.
The school dropout who hails from Amanase, a suburb of Suhum in the Ayensuno District of the Eastern Region, was reportedly trafficked to serve the 62-year-old woman in her home when the alleged incident occurred.
Instead of sending the victim to hospital for medical attention, the guardian was said to have resorted to using certain medicines which have caused the girl’s wounded fingers to deteriorate, resulting in the victim’s inability to eat with her hand.
Some residents who drew the attention of the police to the incident, have threatened to take the law into their hands if the woman is not made to face the full rigors of the law.
“She locks the victim in the washroom without food and water. She assaults the victim every night; sometimes disturbing our sleep. We’ve warned her on several occasions but she won’t listen until this incident occurred. The girl looks malnourished because she doesn’t get food to eat. She even sleeps on the bare floor,” according to a peeved resident.
Another resident told DAILY GUIDE that “this is not the first victim to go through this wicked ordeal. We sometimes have to give the girl food to eat. This is sheer wickedness and the police must let the law work.”
Meanwhile, the suspect is being held by the Community 2 branch of the Domestic Violence and Support Unit (DOVVSU) to assist with investigations.
Information available to DAILY GUIDE indicates that she has been charged with two offenses, namely, child trafficking and child abuse to appear before court. The Police have also handed over the malnourished looking victim to a charity home for shelter.
The victim is said have requested on several occasions to be returned to the Eastern Region since she was rescued by the police, according to information available to this paper.
