President Appoints Four (4) New Supreme Court Judges

President HE Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has in consultation with the council of state appointed four new justices to the Supreme Court.

This was made known by the First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei Owusu on the Floor of the House today, Tuesday [July 3, 2018], following a statement the Presidency sent to Parliament.

The four are: Justice Samuel K. Marful-Sau (Justice of Appeal), Justice Agnes M. A. Dordzie (Justice of Apeal), Prof. Nii Ashie Kotey (former Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Ghana, Legon) and Nene A. O. Amegatcher (private legal practitioner and former President of the Ghana Bar Association).

Currently, there are 12 justices of the Supreme Court.

They are expected to appear before the Appointment Committee of parliament for vetting

Pursuant to Article 144(2) of the Constitution, the Judicial Council conveyed to me its advice on the appointment of the following persons to the Supreme Court:

1. Justice Samuel K. Marful-Ssu, Justice of Appeal

2. Justice Agnes M.A Dordzie, Justice of Appeal

3. Prof. Nii Ashie Kotey, former Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Ghana, Legon

4. Nene A. O. Amegatcher, Private legal practitioner and former President of the Ghana Bar Association.

Upon receipt of the Judicial Council's advice, and in accordance with my duty under Article 144(2), i consulted with the Council of State by submitting the names and curricula vitae of the nominees for appointment to the Supreme Court. the Council of State has notified my office that the consultation process for the appointment of the nominees as Justices of the Supreme Court is now complete.

I am, therefore, in accordance with Article 144(2), seeking the approval of parliament for the appointment of the nominees as Justices of the Supreme Court. their curricula vitae are hereby attached.

Mr. Speaker, it is my respectful hope and expectation that the approval of the nominees will proceed expeditiously, to enable them assume office as soon as practicable.
