Accept Voters’ ID For Ghana Card Registration - UNF Appeals

The United Nkrumaist Front (UNF) has appealed to the National Identification Authority (NIA) to accept the National Voters’ Identification Card in the on-going Ghana Card registration process to avoid denationalisation of a section of the Ghanaian populace.

The appeal was contained in a statement signed and issued by Mr. Michael Aboagye Nketiah, the Regional Secretary of the Front and copied the Ghana News Agency on Thursday in Sunyani.

The UNF is a pressure group consisting of some concerned members of the Nkrumaist Political Parties in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

The statement expressed concern about the rejection of the National Voters’ Identification Card as a form of Identity card in the on-going registration exercise and indicated the fear that some Ghanaians could be denationalised and disenfranchised as a result of that.

It stressed a Passport, Birth Certificate or two witnesses required by the NIA for the process were not the only forms of identification and should consider the acceptance of the Voters’ Identification Card.

The statement noted that the Minority in Parliament had boycotted the exercise whereas some section of Ghanaians had also shown their displeasure with the rejection of the Voters’ Identification Card.

It stated ex-President John Agyekum Kuffour speaking after his registration emphasised the need for the NIA to accept the Voters’ Identification Card as “it is a document that helps identify citizens of Ghana”.

The statement said since the Ghana Card would replace the sectoral identity cards in circulation and become the only card to be used in transactions where identification was required; all efforts must be made by the NIA to capture every Ghanaian.

It therefore appealed to the NIA to heed the call for the acceptance of the Voters’ Identification Card because besides facilitating the registration of all Ghanaians, it would help to speed up the process
