Residents living at low-lying areas in the Birim Central Municipality have been advised to relocate to hilly places before the heavy rains set in, to avoid any havoc.

They were also called upon to plant more trees to serve as windbreak to prevent rainstorm and to improve on the forest cover in the Municipality.

Mr Oscar Kennedy Nyarko, the Head of the Climate Change Adaption Unit under the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Birim Central Municipality gave the advice in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Akim Oda in the Eastern Region.

He explained that climate change was referred to the rise in average surface temperature of the earth and that the climate change adaptation programme was aimed at mitigating its negative impact on the people and the environment.

Mr Nyarko called on the Forestry Commission, the Environmental Health Unit and Non-Governmental organisations for the supply of tree seedlings to enable the people to undertake serious tree planting in their communities. 

 He said in view of the information given out by the Meteorological Department about the expected heavy rains, this year, the Unit had embarked on campaign programmes to alert the people living at flood prone areas to move to safer places in the communities.

Mr Nyarko entreated the residents to desist from throwing refuse into drains and to desilt choked gutters to avoiding flooding.
