Pay Our Allowances By The End Of This Month Or... - UTAG Tells Gov't

University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), national executive committee (NEC) have called on government as the matter of agency to pay their book and research allowances to avoid any conflicts.

A statement by the Association indicated that "following the lackadaisical attitude of government, UTAG on the 7th of July, 2018, wrote to the minister of finance and copied other institutions of government connected with the processing and payment of the book and research allowance (BRA) about the need to make payment by 16th of July, 2018 to forestall agitations on the various campuses".

Speaking at a press conference today at the University of Cape Coast, the National President of the Association, Dr. Eric Opoku Mensah, stated their efforts to get the appropriate authorities to facilitate the payment have yielded no results.

The Association is therefore giving the government an ultimatum of six days from Wednesday, July 25 to the end of this month to release their book and research allowance or they will advise themselves.

He noted that "we have been able to manage the uneasy tension on the various campuses but "the situation is getting out of control and we may be forced to take the decision we have been avoiding".

He cautioned government not to blame them "should the next academic year's calendar be disrupted" which would affect students.

He however reiterated UTAG's commitment to quality education but stressed it won't accept unnecessary delays in the payment of their allowances.
