Fear and trepidation have paralysed the NDC. They are in a dilemma. Their state of confusion is indescribable.
They have reached a stage where going into the next elections with Mahama is perilous, flinching back to fall on a relatively new candidate is seen by some as cowardice and keeping faith with John Dramani Mahama is also suicidal.
They are torn between the devil and the deep blue sea. Mahama is being touted as an unwholesome product by a section of the party. This group believes even as president with something to show for his stewardship, he was awfully whipped.
They are calling for Alabi to be considered for the flagbearership of the party as they ready themselves to contest in the 2020 elections.
Another school of thought also holds the view that in the unlikely event that Mahama is even able to power the party to victory, he cannot go beyond four years, leaving a gaping hole to be filled which can cost them dearly eventually.
It is widely believed that the NDC with or without Mahama cannot win the next elections so fielding a new candidate and repeating him in 2024 will do the trick for the party.
To this end, some are advocating the need to have a person with unblemished character, a leader who cannot be tagged as corrupt and incompetent. Many a party guru sees these traits in Joshua Alabi.
The Mahama team, it has been observed, are loudly propagating and campaigning for him to be elected to lead the party simply because they believe he has the financial muscle to bankroll them as they contest their seats in the next elections.
Their love for Mahama, according to their critics, stems from the fact that the former President has the cash to burn and will tentacle his charitable hands to them. Mahama has the cash, to put it simply. Their affection for JM is pretentious.
The National Democratic Congress is at the crossroads. Leadership and members alike cannot come to a decision as to what will be the best for the party in future but are toying with what is the best for them now. The latter is likely to emerge as the winner.
