Ghana Railway Engineers Arrive In South Africa For Traineeship Programme To Resurrect Rail Network

Ghanaian engineers from the Ghana Railways Company Limited are in South Africa for a three-week training programme with the country’s leading railway and ports company, Transnet International Holdings.

The five member team include Akorfa Addy- Area Civil Engineer, Noel Ofori Attah- Technical Engineer, Michael Oluwa Femi Duodu- Civil Engineer, Seidu Mohammed- Technical Engineer, and Jonathan Tsatsa Numo- Assistant Civil Engineer.

The team which is led by Akorfa Addy [Area Civil Engineer] will be trained by top notch engineers from Transnet to revive the wretched state of Ghana’s rail networks – the training will also prepare the team for the intensive work to be undertaken first on the Accra to Nsawam section of the Eastern Line and then on some sections of the Western Line.

On the Accra to Nsawam section, 30 South African engineers from Transnet are expected in the country next month to oversee the rehabilitation works on that section of the Eastern Line which will employ about 720 Ghanaian workforce.

This is part of the strategic partnership entered into between the Ministry of Railway Development, the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) and Adasa Keteke Company Limited, the local partners of Transnet.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of Adasa Keteke, Kojo Quainoo, the rehabilitation works are expected to be completed by December this year.

The Programme’s Director of Transnet International Holdings, Mr Wilson Mogoba has noted that their core objective in this partnership is to “revitalize, operate and manage” the rail network system in Ghana.

He also said that several training programmes will be introduced to train Ghanaian engineers on rail maintenance.
