Constitutional Review Not An NDC Affair Prez

President John Evans Atta Mills yesterday inaugurated a nine-member Constitutional Review Commission, with a call on Ghanaians to see the review exercise as a national initiative and not for the benefit of any political interests. He said although it had fallen on the NDC government to initiate the review of the 1992 Fourth Republican Constitution which is nearly 20 years old, if doesnt represent the NDC government. It is for the benefit of our dear nation. He said, It is the wish of the people that one must take into consideration, he stressed. He said, it was appropriate that after operating for almost 20 years, the Constitution was reviewed to represent the aspirations of all Ghanaians. We believe this will enable us to operate our democratic system in an efficient and progressive manner, he said, and asked the Commission to undertake the task with all the seriousness it deserved. The setting up of the independent commission, which has Professor (Emeritus) Albert K. Fiadjoe, a professor of public law as chairman, was in fulfillment of the governments campaign promise to have the constitution reviewed to address all identified constitutional challenges. President Mills reminded members of the Commission of the need to perform their duty with utmost impartiality so that the outcome of their work would be acceptable by all. He promised governments co-operation and support to enable the Commission to operate effectively, and wished it well in undertaking the exercise after which it was expected to make proposals for changes for the consideration of Ghanaians.
