AMA Contracts Trucks To Collect Waste As Zoomlion Drivers Strike

Employees of Zoomlion Ghana Limited within Accra, have withdrawn their services without any official notice, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has said.

This has resulted in uncollected rubbish in parts of the capital city.

This may be down to an internal dispute at Zoomlion, the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mohammed Adjei Sowah said in a statement.

He told Citi News ” [Zoomlion] their truck drivers and the janitors have gone on a sit-down strike claiming that they have issues with their management, but that is also affecting their waste collection within the city centres.”

An earlier AMA statement noted that the Assembly had deployed tipper trucks to collect all rubbish lying around as an interim measure to deal with the situation.

“The Assembly wishes to assure the public that it is working around the clock to bring the situation under control,” the statement said.

Mr. Adjei Sowah also appealed to Zoomlion to resolve the issue because of its impact.

“We want to advise the company to understand that the issue of waste management is an essential service and if anything, they should take urgent steps to address those issues. Some of these unplanned and unfortunate happenings affect our waste collection” the statement added.

Zoomlion Ghana limited is one of the companies in charge of waste collection in the metropolis and street sweeping under a Youth Employment Agency module.
