Afful-Broni Is New UEW V-C - PHOTO

Rev. Fr. Professor Anthony Afful-Broni has been inducted into office as the fourth Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education (UEW), Winneba.

The investiture and induction ceremony was held on Monday, 17 September 2018 at the University’s campus, even though there have been strong calls for the suspension of the exercise.

Rev. Fr. Professor Afful-Broni was appointed in an acting capacity after the Governing Council of the University dismissed five principal officers including the then-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mawutor Avoke and four others, over missing vital documents at some offices of the institution.

A Winneba High Court, it would be recalled, in 2017 ordered Prof. Avoke to step aside until a case brought against him and the university’s Governing Council was determined, subsequently paving the way for Rev. Fr. Afful-Broni to get the UEW’s top job.

President Nana Akufo-Addo graced the occasion but Ranking Member of Parliament's Education Committee, Peter Nortsu Kotoe insists the induction of Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni will cause problems for the university due to pending lawsuits.

He earlier called on the president to avoid endorsing an illegality.

In a similar call, Professor Raymond Atuguba, lawyer for Prof. Avoke, described the removal of his client and Finance Officer Theophilus Senyo Ackorlie, from office, as smacking of tribalism.

But that has attracted a sharp condemnation from fellow lawyer, Poku Adusei, who described the assertion as an appeal to pity and emotions.
