A member of the Coalition of NGOs in Water and Sanitation (CONIWAS), Mr. Patrick Aporya, has observed that a lot of pipelines of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) that carry water to consumers’ homes, are rotten.

Mr. Aporya disclosed this in an interview with Class Tuesday, 18 September 2018.

He said: “If you look at the pipelines that we see, they are rotten; if you touch most of them with your hand, they will break, the pipelines, a lot of them are rotten”.

In Mr Aporya’s view, even though the water is treated properly, if there is no funding to replace the current infrastructure, the safety of the final product that comes out of consumers’ taps at home, cannot be guaranteed.

He explained: “They treat the water very well but if they don’t get that financing to replace the infrastructure, there is no way that you can get it safe at your tap”.

According to him, GWCL has been struggling with infrastructure, as most of the pump stations are old and have not seen any rehabilitation since their inception.

“They have been battling with many infrastructure that have never seen any facelift; most of the pump stations are very old, of cause there are new ones that they fixed in about four, five major cities but if you take Weija, for instance, even the companies that manufactured those equipment, some of them are dead and gone.”
