The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has warned transport operators not to increase transport fares following the recent increase in fuel prices.

Some transport operators have threatened to increase their transport fares over the association’s inability to direct same.

Fuel prices have hit the 5 cedi mark with diesel going for GHc5.18 pesewas per litre, and petrol 5.14 per litre.

But speaking on Kasapa Fm, Kwame Kumah, the National Chairman of Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) said although there has been an increment in fuel prices, it will be in bad light for any of its members to resort to an immediate increase in transport fares without recourse to the union.

“A lot is considered when it comes to calculation of transport fares, it does not only depend on fuel and even when it comes to the fuel component, it must reach a threshold of 10% or above before an increment is considered, we do not expect any of our members to increase their fares.

“Both GPRTU and GNPC will have to meet the ministry of transport before we can determine an increment, and as it stands now, there is no need for us to engage the ministry but we are only praying that the prices will become stable,”he said.
He urged government to immediately intervene and put in measures to ensure that the price of fuel is stabilised, so to avoid increment in transport fares.

“We are pleading with government to as a matter of urgency, put in strong measures to stop the rampant fuel increment, so that at least things will be a bit stable for us” he said.
