We Told You So; “Normal Prosecutor” Amidu, Is "No Superman" – NDC MP

NDC’s Member of Parliament for South Dayi constituency in the Volta Region, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor says complaints by the Special Prosecutor, Mr Martin Amidu regarding his (Amidu's) outfit are all “inconsequential” and "false".

If he [Amidu] says he has no laws to work, then it is not correct,” he emphatically stated.

Amidu, who was sworn in as Ghana's first Special Prosecutor in February this year, has lamented the lack of resources to enable him work effectively and efficiently as expected by some Ghanaians in his quest to fight corruption.

Speaking at the National Audit Forum organised by the Ghana Audit Service, Mr Amidu stated that:

I am saying this for the public to understand that we have set up an office. We have to organize that office, have the requisite personnel. It does not take one day. The law says 90 days after the assumption of office of the Special Prosecutor, pursuant legislation must be enacted, but as I speak today, I have no legislation so I use my common sense.”

“The law says I can coordinate with other organizations so I coordinate with the Auditor General, I coordinate with EOCO, I coordinate with other anti corruption agencies so as to find a way by which we can begin to work towards the ultimate end. I have warned that if most of these things are not done by the middle of this year then this office may not be able to be seen to be doing its mandate, because by middle next year we are in an election year. If I arrest someone, you will turn out and look at it; which party does he hold the insurance card for?” he questioned in frustration

But in sharp rebuttal on NEAT FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Montie’, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor who is a member of the Legal Committee of Parliament pointed out that, Martin Amidu has been given the ‘room to operate’, but has so far failed to meet expectations.

Government has appointed a board for him to work with among other things. There are provisions for him to operate and that is stated clearly in the 2018 budget. I am surprised he is saying he can’t work. What is he waiting for? He questioned

I am shocked a very clever man like him is making such comment and asking for a legislative law to work. What about the parent law? We [Parliament] have legislated for him, he should work. As I am speaking he is investigating a case. What people expected from him is not what he is doing. We [NDC] told them [NPP]. He is no superman; his special prosecutor job is now becoming a normal prosecutor job. Martin cannot do any magic,” Rockson-Nelson told host Kwesi Aboagye.
