NGO cleans up Techiman

Members of Techiman Branch of Friends of Trees and River Bodies, an environmental NGO, have undertaken a clean-up exercise along the banks of the Atwereda River and the Techiman Central Market. The exercise, which lasted for more than three hours, also drew some basic school children, workers of Zoomlion, personnel of Environmental Protection Agency, Techiman Municipal Assembly and traditional authorities. They de-silted gutters, swept and weeded some bushy areas. Mr. Henry Fosu Korang, Executive Director of the NGO, expressed gratitude to the participants and urged them to wage a relentless war against environmental pollution and degradation, especially the dumping of human excreta in gutters. Mr. Korang said the organization intended to embark on a reforestation project to protect water bodies in the municipality. Mr. Solomon Osei-Poku, Public Relation Officer, expressed regret about the rapid rate of degradation and desertification in the transitional zone. Mr. Iddrisu Mohammed, Techiman Municipal head of Zoom lion, commended the NGO for organising the exercise and urged the people not to regard Zoomlion as the only body in-charge of waste collection and sanitation management. He asked all to come together to solve sanitation problems since garbage was likely to cause havoc and could lead to outbreak of diseases.
