Ghanaians Are A Stumbling Block To Cleanliness AMA Boss

The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, says Ghanaians have a lukewarm attitude when it comes to the issue of cleanliness of the Capital City, Accra. He said, on various occasions, we as Ghanaians have not supported the idea of any of the Mayors who had the idea of cleaning Accra. He emphasised that there was the need, as Ghanaians, to be part of the solution to the beautification of Accra. We must become part of the solution and not part of the problem anymore, he stated. The special event which will take place at the Black Stars Square in Accra will see the mounting of monuments in the city. The two monuments will each bear an inscription. The first will be Accra the Millennium City and the second A new Accra for a Better Ghana, Get involved. Speaking to Peace FM on Kokrokoo, he revealed that Professor Jeffery Sachs, the Special Advisor to the United Nations Secretary General, will be present during the launch of a special campaign in Accra. He said Accra was one of the best cities in Africa, as such; there was the need to project it to befit its status. All former Mayors of the Capital City made efforts at ensuring a clean city, but the attitude of Ghanaians washed away their brilliant ideas, he said. He told Tweneboah Kodua (TK) who was sitting in for regular host, Kwami Sefa-Kayi, on Kokrokoo, that there was a need for Ghanaians to rally behind him so he can transform Accra into a Millennium City. We need to support Mayors and stop criticizing, he added. Mr. Vanderpuiye enumerated some activities put in place to help beautify Accra, which he said includes, checking sewage systems, improving road networks, sanitation problems, upgrading of institutions and building more schools. He cited the issue of unreliable electricity supply, where waste substances produced would be turned into energy as one of the problems facing Accra. The Accra Mayor urged each and everyone to help actualize the Better Ghana idea being championed by President Mills. He told Peace FM that the idea of modernizing the Capital City which was initiated by the previous government, will also be looked at, adding that any good idea aimed at bringing sanity in the waste management industry will be implemented without hesitation.
