STATEMENT: KNUST Demo...Education Minister To Meet University Authorities, Student Body.

The Ministry of Education will tomorrow Tuesday, 23rd October, 2018, meet authorities and student body of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), over the demonstration which saw properties worth millions of Ghana cedis destroyed and some students injured.

A delegation led by the Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has been dispatched to the school to deliberate with stakeholders on the ongoing rumpus to find lasting solutions.

A statement signed by the Director of Communications, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, said the ministry notes with concern, developments on the KNUST campus with regard to bodily injuries and detention of some students, as well as the destruction of public properties.

The statement however appealed for calm on all sides as a first step to resolving the fracas.

Students of the University, on Monday, October 22, 2018, embarked on a violent demonstration against the University authorities.

The students thronged the streets on campus in their numbers, clad in red and amidst the protest vandalized several properties including the office and car of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso.

A misunderstanding between the students and the school's authorities resulted in the arrest of about 10 students, leading up to the demonstration.

The students are also protesting against a decision by the Vice Chancellor and the authorities to turn the all-male Katanga Hall into a mixed hall with females.

There were disturbing scenes on campus as the students destroyed and burned down some properties, ranging from cars to motorbikes.

Incidents On KNUST Campus

The Ministry of Education has noted with concern development on the campus of the KNUST, particularly with regard to bodily injuries and the detention of some students, as well as the destruction of public property.

The ministry appeals for calm on all sides as a first step to resolving the difficulties.

Meanwhile, a delegation from the ministry, led by the Minister, Hon Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempah will at KNUST campus to meet the university authorities and the students tomorrow 23rd October 2018 at 10 am.
