11 Caged KNUST Students Freed

THE ELEVEN (11) students, who were arrested by the police at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi on Friday, have been freed.

The students were said to have played an integral role in the demonstration that took place at KNUST on Friday evening, which sparked troubles.

The arrested students were detained in police cells at the Tech Police Station from Friday evening, despite wild protests by their parents and guardians.

It is not clear if another 20 students arrested on Monday during the fracas leading to the shutting down of the school have also been freed.

Police Grants Bail

The DAILY GUIDE gathered that the 11 students were eventually granted a police inquiry bail on Saturday by the security agents.

This was after agitated parents and guardians of the 11 students had stormed the Tech Police Station on Saturday morning to demand the release of their children and wards.

Arrest of Students

The 11 students, it would be recalled, were apprehended by the police on KNUST campus on Friday, after they had allegedly caused troubles.

Another student was said to have suffered severe head injuries after being reportedly manhandled by the KNUST security personnel during the arrest.

Injured Student Recovers

Reports making rounds indicated that the injured student, who was rushed to the KNUST Hospital for treatment, is recovering well as of Monday morning.

There were even reports that the injured student may be released from hospital latest by close of Monday as his condition had improved.

Ban on ‘Morale’

The authorities at KNUST had placed a ban on ‘Morale’, also known in the local parlance as ‘Jama’, on campus some weeks ago.

However, some students of the Katanga Hall were seen violating the ban on Friday evening, for which reason they were arrested and sent to the police station.

Eleven students were sent to the police cells and another student, who suffered head injuries during the arrest, spent some days at the hospital receiving treatment.
