Zanetor Rawlings Blasts Gov’t Over Economic Hardship

There is no unanimity in the home of former President Jerry John Rawlings with respect to how the country is being managed at the moment by the Akufo-Addo administration.

Mr Rawlings and wife, Konadu Agyeman Rawlings on one side, appear very conformable with the administration of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and at the least opportunity praise President Akufo-Addo, however, their daughter is holding a different view.

Zanetor,  who is for now, the only active politician among the children of the former first couple, has reportedly said that the current situation, is so bad that even the governing party’s supporters are the ones complaining.

The Korle Klottey Member of Parliament (MP) says she never expected economic condition of Ghanaians to be this difficult as it is being experienced currently under the Akufo-Addo government.

“The things I didn’t expect was to see things become as difficult for every Ghanaian as they are now”, she stated in an interview monitored by MyNewsgh.com.

The NPP on the back of very flamboyant campaign coupled with persuasive promises, lured many Ghanaians to their side, leading to them winning the 2016 general election massively.

Following this, Mrs. Rawlings said she was excited the party her husband founded, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was out of power and a new administration is in-charge.

Speaking on Joy FM, Mrs. Rawlings said “I am happy there is a change… I am very happy…because you can’t have a situation where we claim to be doing well, calling ourselves lower-middle income group, and in a miserable situation,” she stated.

She jabbed the NDC for complaining that the government has not done enough to transform the lives of Ghanaians.

She said, the opposition party should not expect the NPP to use 100 days to fix an economy which was destroyed in eight years.

“A party has taken eight years to destroy us and you expect somebody to use 100 days to fix it?” she rhetorically asked.

But as if she has not been listening to her parents tout President Akufo-Addo, the first daughter of the former first former couple, Zenator, has joined the fray jabbing the government for visiting untold economic hardship on Ghanaians.

She is incensed with the current state of affairs and has gone public with it.

Almost two years into their administration, Ghanaians are complaining like never before with regular fuel increment, tax increment, port charges and so on.

The lawmaker, said even though it is the right of Ghanaians to choose who they want as President, the NPP, has shocked many, especially their supporters who voted massively for them.

“The whole idea of having elections and democracy is for people to choose whom they prefer governing the state, but I don’t think even  those who overwhelmingly voted in favour of expected things to be as bad as they are today”, Zanator stressed.

For now, it seems Mr Rawlings and a few others  in government, like Vice President,  Dr. Bawumia are the ones, who are not experiencing the hardship. The Trades Union Congress (TUC), traders, ordinary Ghanaian s, as well as the President, have all expressed similar concerns admitting there is indeed hardship.

Addressing Ghanaian Community in New York, USA, President Akufo-Addo, attributed the difficulties in the system to the “dramatic increase in crude oil prices” and the strengthening of the US dollar.

He blamed the significant and  rapid depreciation of the cedi for the difficulty, adding that the Bank of Ghana (BoG) is working round the clock to change the situation in order to inure to the benefit of the citizenry

“We have to approach the foreign exchange matter medium to long-term by expanding our supply base, that’s not a crisis…they’re difficulties the system would be able to accommodate…It’s a difficult situation, but a difficult situation also require some amount of fortitude and firm action and that’s what we are trying to do at home,” he said.
