The Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso has been asked to step aside and allow the newly-constituted Interim Council to take over the affairs of the school.
The National Council for Tertiary Education conveyed it to the Vice-Chancellor on Monday, 29 October, 2018.
Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson, has been made ag. Vice-Chancellor.
She became the university’s first female Pro-Vice Chancellor last September.
Government has replaced the dissolved council with a seven-member Interim Council to look into the recent disturbances on campus, which resulted in the destruction of over 40 cars and 10 motorbikes.
However, the UTAG KNUST branch has declared strike while the university remains shut down following the disturbances.
The lecturers said they do not support the government’s arbitrary decision without due consultation with them and also sidelining the Vice Chancellor of the University from the interim council.
Meanwhile, the leadership of the University Students' Association of Ghana has commended government for the dissolution of the KNUST council and has thus presented a warm compliment to the Students' Representative Council (SRC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The Interim Council is chaired by Nana Effah Apenteng, Paramount Chief of the Bompata Traditional Area.
The committee was formed after briefs and recommendations made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, after he led a high-powered delegation, including the Minister of National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah; and the Minister-Designate for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, to Kumasi.
